Redemption is Always Possible

Speaking on redemption, Howard Zinn wrote: “To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places–and there are so many–where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and allows the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.”

Followers of The Way, I’m here to tell you that this world is full of second chances. In our life, in our world, it is never too late to start over….. redemption is always possible. On retreats, I like to remind people of the advice of Julia Child who shares, “If you’re in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up. Who’s gonna know?“

We all make mistakes. Rather than judge yourself or make a big deal about it, figure out a kind and thoughtful way to start over. With difficulties and conflict, (as long as it’s safe) see if you can go back and listen again with an open heart.

I practiced with Joshu Sasaki, a zen master who died in LA at the age of 106. A woman student came to him confused. She had been doing intensive zen meditation and said, “It feels like I’m dying to my old identity, I don’t know who I am anymore.” He looked at her, smiled and said, “Death okay. Resurrection okay too.” They are both a part of life, like breathing in and out.

Even now, amidst your difficulties, you can always stop and pause and listen to the wisdom of the heart. It says, remember, you can start again. No matter the situation, you can always pause, listen with kindness, and courageously plant new seeds.

As Henry David Thoreau says, “I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, but I have great faith in a seed. Convince me you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.”
