Inner Technology
for Outer Technology

Cultivating presence, compassion, and wise action in the age of AI and digital overwhelm.

A letter from Jack

Dear friend,

Welcome. I'm very glad you're here.

We live in a remarkable time. In just a few decades, technology has transformed how we communicate, learn, work, and relate to one another. With a small device in our hands we can reach across the world and connect with people we may never meet in person.

And yet, as many of us know, the same technologies that promise connection can also bring distraction, anxiety, and division. With the rise of artificial intelligence, we are reminded even more clearly that no matter how powerful our tools become, wisdom and compassion must still come from the human heart.

The question is not whether technology will shape our lives — it already does. The deeper question is: Who are we as we engage with it?

This course explores what I like to call inner technology. These are the timeless capacities of the human heart and mind — mindfulness, compassion, emotional wisdom, and loving awareness — that help us meet the powerful outer technologies of our age with clarity and care.

The purpose of these practices is not perfection. It is simply to remember to come home to the heart of kindness when we notice we are lost. From that place, your relationship with technology — and with the world — can begin to change.

With metta,

Jack Kornfield

The question of our time

Outer tools
amplify inner states.

AI did not invent our greed, our fear, our reactivity. But it carries them at remarkable speed and scale. The work, then, is the same work it has always been — only now it is more urgent.

What you will cultivate

Four inner technologies of the heart

These are not new. They are timeless. But in this moment of acceleration, they have never been more needed — nor more practical.

01
Mindfulness
The capacity to pause — to step out of the trance of speed and stimulation, and meet the moment as it is.
02
Compassion
The softened heart that turns toward suffering, in ourselves and in the world, without averting its gaze.
03
Emotional Wisdom
Naming what is here. Loneliness, longing, restlessness — felt directly, no longer driving us in the dark.
04
Loving Awareness
The ground beneath identity. The presence that holds it all, and remembers we are larger than our reactions.

  • 1.1
Arriving: Stepping Out of the Trance
A welcome and a setting of the north star — what brings you here?
  • 1.2
The Human Heart in a Technological Age
Outer tools amplify inner states. Who am I becoming in relation to the tools I use every day?
  • 1.3
We Are in Relationship with Technology
Not a tool we use, but a relationship we are in. Anxiety, freedom, and the courage to stay calm amidst stormy waters.
  • 1.4
How Technology Amplifies Fear, Desire, and Division
The Four Noble Truths in modern life. Projection, enemy-making, and expanding the window of tolerance.
  • 1.5
Guided Meditation — Connecting With Your Device from Loving Awareness
Our first formal sit. Breath as anchor. Resting in awareness larger than any label.
  • 1.6
The Sacred Pause Before the Device
A simple, radical shift: technology becomes the place where practice begins, not where awareness disappears.
The rhythm of practice

Each session is a small bell
called back to the day.

Teaching
A short, warm talk from Jack. Direct, grounded, often quietly funny — drawing on fifty years of practice and a steady eye on the present moment.
Guided Practice
A simple meditation or mindful pause. Meet your breath, your body, your device. Short enough to fit between calls; deep enough to change a day.
Discussion
An honest question, not a quiz. What does this bring up for you, right now, not ideally? A place to sit with what is actually true.
Integration
One small, doable thing to carry into life — a phone bed at night, a breath before unlocking, a single moment of metta toward the person on the other end of the screen.
Voices in the teaching

A conversation with the wise
across many lifetimes.

“No amount of outer technology is going to stop continuing warfare, climate change, racism, or divisiveness — because the root of those is the human heart and mind.”
— Jack Kornfield
“Part of inner technology is to recognize suffering and not avert your gaze.”

About the teacher

Jack Kornfield

Jack is one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. A clinical psychologist, former Buddhist monk, and co-founder of Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock Meditation Center, he has trained generations of teachers and led retreats around the world for nearly fifty years.

In recent years, he has been in conversation with leaders in artificial intelligence, climate, and technology — exploring how the timeless practices of presence and compassion can meet the most urgent questions of our age.

This course is the distillation of those conversations: a clear, warm, deeply practical map for how to live, work, and love in a world being rewritten in real time.

  • Author of A Path with Heart, The Wise Heart, and other beloved works
  • Co-founder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center
  • Ph.D. in clinical psychology
Honest questions

Before you begin.

Yes. Jack teaches in a deeply secular, accessible way. There is no doctrine to accept and no tradition to convert to. Mindfulness here is simply the practice of paying loving attention — a human capacity that belongs to everyone.
