We often come to spiritual practice carrying so much—the problems of our body, the tasks we have to do, the stories we tell of our life, our fears, our hopes. Perhaps we imagine that if we practice well enough, we will become less anxious, more relaxed, a more pleasant person. Maybe even a great spiritual human being.
Recently, I was speaking with someone who saw themselves as a leader. They were struggling with the expectations of all the people they were trying to serve. I asked them, “How about if you were to see yourself as a servant of love, or as a servant of joy?”
The world needs our deepest medicine now. So many people are exhausted and overwhelmed, frightened by war, loss, and uncertainty. We may wonder how to meet such immense suffering without being consumed by it—and how to keep faith when so much around us feels turbulent.
