We all want a good story. Especially in trying times, our cultures need stories to inspire us, educate us, touch us, and bring us together. Shared stories make us larger than ourselves.
Once, while traveling through the southern mountains of Thailand, I rode with my teacher, Ajahn Chah, in the back of a small pickup truck. The road twisted along cliffs and through jungled hills. On one side was a steep drop-off that disappeared into the mist; on the other, a wall of green.
When we are treated with true respect, something inside us comes alive. It’s as if, in that moment, we are finally seen. Everyone—and everything—thrives on respect. It’s the soil in which love grows. Our relationships, our communities, and our world are all nourished by it.
